17. Amee

Chae stumbled through the trees. The dying man's face was in her line of sight. She staggered, hurt and surprised. But more hurt. Painful like.

Her eyes widened and squeezed themselves shut. She didn't want to see.

And again, open, shut. Perhaps a confirmation.

"Marked," I mumbled.

She seemed to snap, something changed. She became all business like.

Anyway, she was rigid, she marched to his side dropped down and ripped the seams of his shirt, fully exposing the seal. Blistered and raw. I shuddered.

She had a knife with her and immediately started to shave the mark off.

"No..." I shuddered and turned away. I didn't see the rest.

Tae crashed through the foliage nearby, he stared in horror. He circled around to get a better view. He seemed conflicted.

The man either coughed or muttered something.

"Oscar," Tae said repeatedly.

I threw a glance at Tae, he seemed forgiving but all I felt was numbness, it was so unreal, like an out-of-body experience.

I blindly followed Chae's instructions. Press this against there, support his torso, walk in time, left, right, left, open the door, take a rest.

She wanted me to stay the night with them, maybe I seemed weird or something. Just numb.
