31. Tae

I had thought the bloodlines would come for the funeral day and go back the next day. I don't know why I thought that. They started arriving early, before even Chae and I arrived. This situation forced us to separate from the kids. And by kids I mean Amee and the younger ones. Wes doesn't count.

Willow was the first. Eager to see Chae, I bet. Alex with her, of course, given their relationship. And Misha, an Ashenbury who could read minds.

I think there's a distinction between their theos'. Missha reads the present, but Willow reads your history, your past.

It freaks me out.

Having no privacy freaks me out but I've learnt to deal with it. It's not their fault. Their theos isn't like mine, it's not something they can switch on or off. The thought of what it would be like to know the exact extent of how much someone feared or hated me made me sympathetic. They respect my privacy, I think. I know Willow definitely does but I just don't know Misha well enough.

Plus, she was wearing a hat that covered her expression quite well. I could only barely make out her eyes.

Ah, our eyes. It's just one more thing that distinguishes us from the humans. Apart from our physical and theal abilities, our eyes change color when we use our theos. It's different for everyone, it's not genetic or environmental, it's unique.

It shows as a few thin rims around the iris, usually blending in with or depending on your secondary color, contrasting with the real iris. If we use our theos a lot, sometimes our full iris will change color.

Chae's eyes turn amethyst. Willow's turns a goldish, hazel colour. Alex's become black, he looks like Lucifer or something hellish. And mine? Just an ordinary green, nothing special.

I'm always ordinary, for fuck's sake.
