33. Alex

It's not right. It's not right that at least half of the people attending the funeral didn't know them personally.

All the Royals are here. The declaration sent out by Tae had made this a non-hostile situation. The safest situation to gather information about the other bloodlines.

It was an open funeral, and many wanderers were attending. People who wanted to keep abreast of the political situation and people who wanted to be part of history. None of whom mattered. Just the decision makers. The Royals.

You already know some of the main twelve bloodlines. The Parks with the theos of perception. The Ashenburys with the theos of the mind. The Easelys with the theos of time. The Graysons with the theos of emotions. And mine, the Sahas with the theos of the elements.

I saw two of the other heirs today. Hero Easely's father had been close friends with Jin Park. I knew that. The Easely territory bordered mine and we had met often. Not as friends but negotiators looking to resolve problems. He was as persistent as I was stubborn. And although it was clear that I had a lot more experience as a fighter and as a leader, he wasn't intimidated. It's what good leaders are made of.

"Hello Hero," I said cordially.

"It's good to see you outside of negotiations, Alex," he replied amicably. "This is Serge, the Rios heir."

"Hi Alex," said Serge. He held out his hand.

I glanced at his extended palm warily but nonetheless shook it. I heated my palm, just to see his reaction.

He grinned. "Impressive, and a strong soul as well."

"You can tell? Ah, Rios, the theos of souls."

"Serge isn't Royal," Hero chuckled.

Serge turned around. "Must you? Really, Hero?"

Hero shrugged, smirking. "Just protecting Alex from your lies."

"Since when? Name one time that I've lied." Serge challenged.

"Queenie."

Serge's face was horrified. "Dude! Stop reminding me. Please."

"Who? Queenie?" Hero feigned innocence.

"Nah, your mum," Serge said sarcastically. And then he smirked.

"Don't even think..." Hero's satisfied smile slipped off as he warned Serge dangerously.

Serge laughed. "Have you met Chae?" he asked me, distracting Hero and pointing towards the bench where she was sitting with Willow.

At the mention of her name, Chae glanced over and waved at Serge.

"Yeah, my fiancee and Chae are good friends. Tae and I are mates, too."

"Fiancee?" Serge whistled.

"I'm guessing the one on the left?" Hero asked.

"Yeah, that's Chae on the right if you haven't met her," I said.

"Hero hasn't met either Chae or Willow, right? He's new to the Elite world," said Serge.

"I think I like her," Hero decided.

Serge groaned. "Of course, you like her! You're French, you like everyone."

"That's a generalisation and I resent it. I'm only part French. But seriously..." he grinned.

Serge rolled his eyes.

"She can hear you," I winced, as she turned around and gave him a weird look.

Willow had doubled over, laughing her heart out, her blonde hair flew about her wildly as she convulsed in giggles.

"I've never even met you, Hero," Chae declared from the distance.

"All the better," he answered. "Love at first sight."

"Cheesy," Serge groaned.

Hero laughed, as though he intended it.

Hero started walking towards them, while Serge and I followed shaking out heads.

Chae scoffed. "Don't be ridiculous."

"Is that a challenge?"
